Fall risk and nutrional status. What
is the link? It’s pretty simple when you think about it. Poor nutrition sparks muscle and
weight loss. Capitol Spine & Rehabilitation carefully assesses our
older Baton Rouge chiropractic patients at risk for falls, paying
special attention to their nutritional status. Capitol Spine & Rehabilitation cares about fall prevention!
NUTRITIONAL STATUS BEFORE FALLS
Researchers attempted to describe
the association between nutritional status and body mass
index (BMI) and fall risk and recurrent fall risk in older people
who reside in community settings. They discovered that
malnourished patients and those at risk for malnourishment maintained
a 45% higher risk of having at least one fall. (1)
Checking BMI and nutritional status is relatively
easy to do. Capitol Spine & Rehabilitation does it to safeguard
our Baton Rouge chiropractic patients!
Baton Rouge FALL RISK AND MALNUTRITION
Fall risk assessments have often ignored
nutritional status instead concentrating on issues like balance
and fall risk-increasing drugs.
Nutritional status has a role,
too. Malnutrition prompts weight loss which leads to
muscle weakness which leads to an increase in fall risk. It’s truly
a ripple effect! A recent study reported
that malnutrition was significantly associated with high fall risk
according to a few leading fall risk assessment
tools (particularly the Johns Hopkins fall risk assessment
tool). (2) Preventing falls is optimal. Recovering from falls is important.
NUTRITIONAL STATUS AND RECOVERY AFTER FALLS
Low nutritional status in older adults especially those who have a history of falling puts them at risk of inferior recovery from a fall.
Nearly a third of community-dwelling adults with a history
of falling were either already malnourished or at risk of
malnourishment. Improving the nutritional status of those who experienced
a fall increased their physical
performance. (3) Capitol Spine & Rehabilitation understands nutrition and is ready
to help our at-risk patients enrich theirs!
